Pennies for Peace (local news article)
Pennies can go a long way for peace when you've got students in a middle school like Kopachuck Middle in Gig Harbor, WA. doing the collecting.
The students at Kopachuck Middle School guided by teachers and parent coordinator, Sandy Dawson, joined hands with tens of thousands of other school children around the world who share the vision and dedication to empower communities through education in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Pennies for Peace broadens students' cultural horizons and empathy for others.
Pennies don't buy much here in the USA, but in the villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan it goes a long way to transforming young lives. Consider that:
1 penny = a pencil 2-3 pennies=an eraser 15 pennies=a notebook $20=one child's annual school supplies
This campaign began with 2 Kopachuck students, Kait Dawson and Heather Shelby, who read the young reader's edition of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Relin. A group of nine 6th grade students formed a book club to launch Pennies for Peace in support of Mortenson's Central Asia Institute dedicated to raise funds for children's education in remote mountain villages in northern Pakistan and Afghanistan.
