Become an Instructor for The Heritage Institute
The Heritage Institute (THI) has been a leader in progressive continuing education for K-12 educators since 1975. Our philosophy of Educating for Humanity provides the inspiration for our leading edge perspective on teaching and learning and for our vision of schools as enriching and productive learning environments for all children.
Our instructors are an inspiring group of over 100 professional educators, a majority of whom have significant experience as K-12 teachers and/or as teacher instructors. Many currently teach full or part-time, and some are retired. Other instructors include those with experience as counselors, outdoor educators, college professors, and other professions that serve educators and/or K-12 students.
Enthusiastic and qualified instructors are the heart of our organization, and we are always looking for great teachers who:
· Possess a Master's degree or higher (required);
· Are passionate about their work as teachers and teacher instructors;
· Have expertise in the subject or topic they wish to teach;
· Can generate 10 registrants for their course in the first year;
· Have experience in K-12 education & teacher training;
· Propose innovative, timely course ideas;
· Can inspire & support teachers in reaching their best;
Distance courses & Workshops are the main kinds of programs we offer. Distance courses consisting of Online courses and Guided Independent Studies are a major portion of our offering and are open to teachers anywhere in the world with internet access. Workshops on a variety of subjects are offered at our main teaching sites in Seattle & Portland. Some of our instructors also offer field courses on Northwest natural and regional history.
New courses most needed are in the areas of:
Math (Geometry, algebra), applied math
Early Childhood, K-3
ESL & ELL
Health, nutrition, PE & sports
American and world literature
Technology, media, Web 2.0 applications for the classroom
University Continuing Education Quaryter Credit is available for most courses offered by The Heritage Institute through Antioch University, Seattle (AUS) which provides continuing education, quarter credits (3 quater cr. = 2 semester cr.) that are acceptable in most states toward re-certification and within most school districts for salary advancement.
In-Service Offerings can be supported by university credit, Washington State clock hours or Oregon PDUs. We can support school and district professional development by customizing programs and referring instructors to meet specific needs.
To Propose a Course, Do The Following:
1. Familiarize Yourself with The Heritage Institute and Our Course Offerings by reading About Us and reviewing our Courses, being sure not to duplicate what we are offering with your new proposal.
2. Download and complete the THI Course Proposal form. Send it to Mike [at] hol.edu.
3. Discuss Your Idea for a New Course. Mike Seymour who will contact you for a phone conversation.
4. Prepare & submit a syllabus to Mike Seymour once your idea has been reviewed and accepted. We will provide syllabus samples.
5. Begin Marketing Your Course to potentially interested educators in your school, district and/or state once you have been notified of Antioch University approval. THI will advertise a new course via email and on our web site, as well as including a new distance or online course in the next printing of our catalog, issued annually in January.
6. About Inclusion in Our Next Catalog
Distance & Online Course Inclusion in Our Next Catalog requires every new distance or online course syllabus to be submitted to Mike Seymour mike [at] hol.edu no later than August 15st of each year to be shown in the following year’s catalog.
Workshop or Field Study Course Inclusion in Our Next Catalog requires that you are an established presenter, with your own mailing list for promotion, and have demonstrated consistent successful workshop offerings.
When submitting your brief Course Description and your Resume, please also include your marketing strategy, your recent course dates, locations and enrollment numbers.
